Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Maryland School for the Deaf opened in 1868.
What is your primary product or service?
Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is Maryland’s center of knowledge and experience in the education of deaf and hard of hearing children from birth to age 21. MSD is known nationally and internationally for high quality education and success in helping children achieve literacy and reach their potential.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Since 1868, MSD has been at the forefront in shaping educational trends for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth. At MSD, learning takes place directly, not through an interpreter. Fluency in ASL and written English is the goal for all MSD students. This bilingual education opens doors for students, helping them become adults who function successfully in ASL and English speaking communities. Students actively engage in academic, extracurricular, and social life. MSD implements Maryland’s top-ranked public school curriculum in conjunction with a comprehensive range of supportive services and activities. This integrated approach effectively promotes each student’s success and ability to achieve their maximum potential. At MSD, children fit in. They aren’t different or the odd one out. Shared language and communication unifies MSD’s diverse community of children and adults who have residual hearing, are Deaf, wear hearing aids, have cochlear implants, and/or come from different parts of the country and the world. Because students feel part of a secure community, they feel free to be themselves. At MSD, students form connections with peers and adults that last a lifetime.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
MSD provides family education, early childhood services, Pre-K, and Kindergarten through Grade 12 educational programs on campuses in Frederick and Columbia. The Frederick Campus serves students from birth to age 21 and the Columbia Campus serves children from birth through age 16.
What type of payments do you accept?
An MSD education is FREE to Maryland residents. Out-of-state students pay tuition.
Which areas do you service?
An MSD education is available to deaf and hard of hearing children from birth to age 21 from anywhere in the state of Maryland.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Maryland School for the Deaf is an independent state agency governed by a Board of Trustees and overseen by a Board-appointed Superintendent. The Maryland legislature provides approximately 90% of MSD’s operating budget. Sponsorships, gifts, and grants from community partners, alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations provide critical support that allows MSD to fulfill its mission of excellence.
