Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
59 years - founded by Paul Bunton in 1957 in Washington, DC
What is your primary product or service?
Fully reconditioned Leitz (Germany) optical microscopes that have been updated and modernized with LED lighting, digital image capture and motorized functions. Restored laboratory microscopes for life science and industrial applications. RRR....we promote the reuse of older microscopes by updating their capabilities and restoration to operable condition. We locate the missing parts needed to make a Leitz microscope fully functional again. These instruments are then made very affordable and fully functional for many years.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
This is a family business and I am second generation. I have always worked for the company even as a teenager in high school and college.
My interest in science and technology were instrumental in my continued interest in microscopy and the new digital world that has evolved.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We fully understand the Leitz microscope line and all products from about 1960-1995. We service what we sell. We would rather sell a fully functional Leitz microscope that has been restored and upgraded than a new instrument that has nearly become a disposable commodity item today. We have a YouTube channel: TheMICROBG Demonstrations of optical products, digital technology and microscopy methods.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location but I have sales and service associates across the USA who we can recommend for local support. With internet sites like Ebay and LabX, we do not need a lot of brick and mortar locations. We have a demonstration area here at our Mount Airy, MD location for appointment showings of our microscopes.
Provide detailed directions to your location
GPS or Mapquest our address. We are located just off Rt. 144 (Old National Pike) between New Market and Mount Airy.
